ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
Tongji University is a key university directly under the Ministry of Education of China. It is one of the key universities listed in the national “211 Project” and the “Action Plan for the Revitalization of Education for the 21st Century”. Tongji University was founded in 1907. It was originally the Tongji German Medical School and Engineering School founded by Germans in Shanghai. It was officially named a university in 1923 and established as a national university in 1927. It was once a comprehensive university famous at home and abroad for its five major colleges of science, engineering, medicine, literature, and law. In 1952, it became the largest and most comprehensive engineering university in the field of civil engineering in China. After a century, Tongji University has now become a research-oriented, comprehensive university with 10 major categories: science, engineering, medicine, literature, law, economics, management, art, philosophy, and education.
The university strives to promote the internationalization process and has established extensive cooperative relations with the education, science and technology and economic circles of Germany, France, Britain, the United States, Japan, Canada, Australia, Italy, Finland, Spain and other countries. With the approval of the Chinese and German governments, the “Sino-German College” and “Sino-German Vocational Teacher Training Center” were established at Tongji University. The “Sino-French Engineering and Management College” was established in cooperation with France, and the “Sino-Italian College” was established with the consent of the Chinese and Italian governments. The “Tongji University-UNEP School of Environment and Sustainable Development” was established in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Program. It also has many Sino-foreign cooperative education projects such as the Sino-Australian College.
Tongji University vigorously develops the education of foreign students. In 2019, the total number of international students was 3,826, and the proportion of degree students among long-term international students was nearly 50%.

Application Materials
1. Passport: Personal information page (valid until January 30, 2026, or later).
2. Degree Certificates and Transcripts:
For bachelor’s degree Program: High school diploma and transcript.
For master’s degree Program: Bachelor’s degree and transcript.
For PhD Program: Master’s degree and transcript.
3. Language Proficiency: TOEFL (min. 80), IELTS (min. 6.0), or equivalent proof.
4. Personal Statement: Fill out in the language of the program.
5. Recommendation Letters: Two letters from associate professors or equivalent.
6. Physical Examination Form: Completed within the last six months.
7. Registration Fee Proof: Upload payment receipt or screenshot.
8. Supplementary Materials: Any additional supporting documents.
Failure to submit the required documents on time will result in application rejection.
Eligibility:
- Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens.
- For a bachelor’s program, applicants should have a high school diploma or its equivalent. For a master’s program, a bachelor’s degree is required. PhD applicants must hold a master’s degree.
