About the university

Founded in 1981, Shantou University (STU) is a comprehensive institution located in Guangdong Province, China. Established with the support of the Guangdong Provincial Government, the Ministry of Education, and the Li Ka Shing Foundation, STU is notable for being the only public university globally continuously subsidized by a private foundation. Its campus spans 1,889.28 mu with a built area of 566,000 square meters.
Supported by significant national and provincial leaders, including Deng Xiaoping and Hu Jintao, STU has evolved into a key university in China. It was designated as the first Demonstration University for Institutional Reform in Guangdong in 2018, following a tripartite agreement with the Ministry of Education and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. This agreement also facilitated the establishment of the Guangdong Technion Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) in 2016, representing a major milestone in international academic cooperation.
The university benefits greatly from over HK$10 billion in support from the Li Ka Shing Foundation, which emphasizes “good governance in support of academic freedom.” STU is dedicated to innovative reforms and aims to become a leading research university by integrating disciplines across Liberal Arts, Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and advancing educational development.
