JINAN UNIVERSITY
ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
Jinan University is the first government-founded overseas Chinese university in China. The name “Jinan” originates from the Book of History: Yu Gong, meaning the university aims to spread Chinese culture far and wide, especially towards Southeast Asia and overseas. The university is a national “double first-class” institution, jointly supported by the Central United Front Work Department, the Ministry of Education, and the Guangdong Provincial Government.
Founded in 1906 as Jinan Academy by the Qing government, the university has undergone multiple relocations and transformations, eventually being rebuilt in Guangzhou in 1958. Suspended during the Cultural Revolution, it resumed operations in 1978, rapidly developing after China’s reform and opening up. By 1996, Jinan University was recognized as a national key university, and by 2017, it was designated as a “double first-class” institution.
Jinan University has cultivated over 500,000 talents from more than 170 countries and regions, emphasizing the school motto of “loyalty, faith, and respect.” It offers a wide range of disciplines, including literature, science, engineering, and medicine, with significant cross-integration potential.
