Jianghan University (JHU)

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

Jianghan University (JHU), a multidisciplinary university, is located in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province in central China. It was a merger in October 2001 of the former Jianghan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Hankou Branch), Wuhan Education Institute, and Wuhan Staff Medical College. The university is directly administered by Wuhan Municipal Government and partially by Hubei Provincial Government.

JHU has been developing into a prestigious high-level local university with distinctive characteristics since the merging approved by the Ministry of Education in 2001. With its dedication to its home city of Wuhan, the province of Hubei, and the nation at large, JHU aims for high-quality student cultivation and university development. This dedication has yielded tangible results, as evidenced by the university’s significant enhancement in overall capabilities and societal impact. Today, JHU stands unique in Hubei as the first provincial university boasting a doctoral program, a state key laboratory, and the honor of hosting an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering at the same time.

JHU is home to 17 academic schools, providing 74 undergraduate programs, 26 master’s degree programs, and a prestigious first-level doctoral degree program across 11 primary disciplines. These disciplines encompass a broad spectrum, including economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agronomy, medicine, management, and arts. Furthermore, JHU boasts a post-doctoral program and has been recognized for its academic excellence with 5 province-level key disciplines and 5 province-level clusters of featured disciplines. In materials science, chemistry, environment/ecology, and clinical medicine categories JHU ranked top 1% worldwide according to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) Global Ranking.

As to the full-time students, JHU currently boasts 19,821 domestic undergraduates, 2,589 postgraduates and doctoral candidates, as well as 209 international undergraduates. The academic staff totals 1,405, among which 232 are professors and 744 individuals hold doctoral degrees. Additionally, many teachers have been awarded with different prestigious academic titles of national level, demonstrating the high reputation and influence of JHU.
