TIANJIN MEDICAL UNIVERSITY logo

Tianjin Medical University (TMU) was established in 1951 as Tianjin Medical College by the renowned endocrinologist Professor Chu Hsien-I. It became one of the first higher education medical institutions recognized by the Chinese government after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. In 1994, TMU emerged as a key player in China’s medical education landscape after merging with Tianjin Second Medical College. This consolidation earned it a spot in the prestigious “211 Project” in 1996, making it the only local university in Tianjin to receive this recognition. TMU continued its ascent by becoming a university jointly developed by the Tianjin Municipal People’s Government, the National Health Commission, and the Ministry of Education in 2015. By 2017, it was included in the “World First Class Discipline” initiative, and in 2022, it was further honored as a “Double First Class” university, solidifying its status as a leading institution in China.
TMU operates on two campuses—Qixiangtai Road and Guangdong Road—and manages seven affiliated hospitals. The university offers 21 undergraduate majors across 19 schools and departments, including an independent school. TMU is home to 11,509 students, of whom 5,517 are undergraduates, 4,127 are Master’s students, 1,188 are Ph.D. students, and 677 are international students hailing from 105 countries.

The university’s academic and research staff is equally impressive, with 8,618 employees, including 807 senior and 1,726 associate senior staff. TMU boasts 144 nationally recognized talents, including academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, along with multiple recipients of prestigious awards such as the National Science Foundation for Outstanding Young Scholars. The university has also established 15 national and 2 Tianjin municipal first-class discipline development points, with 9 disciplines ranked in the global top 1% of Essential Science Indicators (ESI), including Clinical Medicine.

In the realm of education, TMU is a trailblazer. It was among the first institutions in China to implement eight-year and seven-year pilot programs in medical studies. The university has received numerous accolades for its educational initiatives, including 3 First National Teaching Material Development Awards and several national and municipal teaching awards. TMU’s International Medical School, established in 1997, leads in international medical education, offering 8 national and 25 municipal brand courses in English. The school’s efforts in establishing a teaching and quality assurance system for clinical medicine education for international students have been nationally recognized.

TMU’s commitment to research is evident in its extensive infrastructure, which includes 2 national key laboratories, 33 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, and 20 research institutes. Since the “12th Five-Year Plan,” the university has been awarded 158 scientific and technological awards and secured over 1.6 billion yuan for 3,266 research projects. The university’s affiliated hospitals are recognized as centers of excellence, with 24 national key clinical specialties and several national-level demonstration centers.

On the global front, TMU has forged partnerships with 100 universities and institutions across 27 countries. The university has conferred honorary and visiting professorships on 162 world-renowned medical experts and established an “Advisory Committee of Foreign Experts” to guide its internationalization efforts.
TMU’s mission is centered on integrating medical science with life sciences, focusing on education, research, and high-quality medical services. The university is dedicated to producing top-tier medical professionals and cutting-edge research, all while maintaining a distinctive academic culture. TMU aims to continue its trajectory as a leading research-oriented medical institution on both the national and global stages.
